How the kits differ

Swab kits. The chlamydia and gonorrhoea kits use a self-collected swab sample, with extraction reagents and a test cassette in the pack. Follow the collection method shown on the pack for your sex.

Finger-prick kits. The herpes and syphilis kits use a finger-prick blood sample. The herpes kit is a lateral flow test for IgG and IgM antibodies to HSV-1 and HSV-2, and the pack contains two tests. The syphilis kit is a lateral flow test for Treponema pallidum antibodies. For tips on collecting your sample, see our guide to getting a good finger-prick blood sample.

One infection per kit. Each kit is designed for one infection. The herpes kit covers both HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Using your kit

  • Follow the step-by-step instructions in your pack.
  • Use your timer and read the result within the window shown for your kit. Do not interpret it after the stated time.
  • If the control line does not appear, the test has not run correctly and the result is invalid. The most common reason is not getting enough sample. You will need a new test.

Common questions

Can one kit test for every STI?

No. Each kit is designed for one infection. The herpes kit covers both HSV-1 and HSV-2. You would use a separate kit for each infection you want to test for.

What samples do the kits use?

The chlamydia and gonorrhoea kits use a swab. The herpes and syphilis kits use a finger-prick blood sample.

How quickly do the kits give a result?

The chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis kits are read at 10 minutes and the herpes kit at 15 minutes. Do not interpret results after the time stated in your pack.

Are the kits delivered discreetly?

Yes. Orders are dispatched in plain outer packaging with nothing on the label indicating the contents.
